Q：Good morning, I’m Qian li. As we all know, the Global Lawyers Forum, known as GLF, kicked off this Monday in Guangzhou.
After a strict inspection by GLF, Ms. Kaying Li, was honored to be selected as a volunteer to support this forum.Kaying is a lawyer from Kingpound Law Firm, and specialized in business law, foreign-related consultancy and litigation.
Today we’re so lucky to have Kaying here to share some stories behind the scene with us. Good morning, kaying.
K：Good morning, Qianli. very honored to be invited here.
Q：What is the purpose of the GLF?
K：The forum is aimed to deepen exchanges and cooperation among lawyers around the world.
This is the first world lawyer’s event hosted by China, and has attracted about 800 lawyers, officials and legal experts from 57 countries.
The GLF has covered topics including legal services related to the Belt and Road Initiative, science and technology, international trade and dispute resolution.
Q：Kaying, I’ve heard the selection to the volunteers was extremely strict. Is that true?
K：Yes, I believe so. More than 300 lawyers and practice attorneys have signed up for GLF volunteers, but in the end, only 82 lawyers have been selected.
Q：You mean, the acceptance rate was even less than 30%?
K：Yes, and the final list was reported to Dept. of Justice of GD, and verified by the All-China Lawyers Association.I was feeling like passing a very important examination.
Q： And not an easy one.
K：(smiling) you got that.
Q：So, is there any special training to the volunteers?
K：Yes, we had, several times actually. As organizers were Dept. of justice of GD and GD lawyers association, we can feel the organizer took it very seriously and tried to be fully prepared.
For example, our first training has been lasting for the whole day, including all the 370 volunteers from different divisions, such as government officials and employees, lawyers and students from GD University of Foreign Studies and GD Justice Police Vocational college.
Q：What’s the contents of the training?
K：The training covered a lot of areas, such as the forum introduction, Customs of different countries, the rules of etiquette for foreigners, and first-aid knowledge, for example, how to do CPR.
Q：really? sounds very complete and thorough!
K：Yes, I think it’s really necessary. You never know what would happen to such a big conference. Not only that, after the first training, we had been divided into several functional groups and set up teams by Wechat very quickly. Therefore, each group had organized further trainings for another 2 or 3 times.
Q：Is there anything special during the training?
K：Particularly, I remembered Mr. Kang Yu. He used to be the Director of Bureau of International Cooperation of Ministry of Justice, PRC.
he took us to the conference locations for several times, trained us hand by hand, just for making sure that we would remember every procedure.
We thought he would be very serious, but he was such a nice man, very patient to answer every question from us.
You can even hear that his voice has changed because of speaking too much.
Q：How about you, Kaying? Which group are you in? What did you do?
K：I was in the reception group, working as one of the recipients of distinguished overseas guests. I have been providing “1 on 1 guidance” to the guest, including translation, pick-up and drop-off, conference guidance, and so on.
Q：Did you enjoy it?
K：Yes, indeed. It was a very fascinating experience. My guest was the Secretary of State from Cambodia and used to be a business lawyer. He told me about the justice system in Cambodia. Also, we have talked about some legal issues for Chinese investment there. Not only that, I had the chance to talk to different guests. It was quite nice and I learned a lot.
Q：Was there any emergency at the conference?
K：Yes, there were some. Most of them are flight delays.Besides these, more than one guests have lost their mobile, leaving their phones on taxi or at the conference site. But with the quick response and cooperation by our volunteers, every guest has successfully got their phone back, in a short period. At that time, you can really feel the strong power of our team.
Q：Wow, I can’t imagine. So, Kaying, what did our guests think about this forum?
K：Most of them were extremely impressed with this forum.Generally, their comment to GLF, let me quote, “far beyond the expectation.”
First of all, the organization was absolutely high-level.There were volunteers and cars waiting at the airports and train stations for 24 hours, to make sure we wouldn’t miss any guest.
Secondly, the security measurement was very strict. All the conference entries were equipped with a facial recognition system.
Q：Sounds pretty high-tech.
K：It does. If the system can’t recognize your face, you can’t get in.
Moreover, the guests said this forum was super well-organized.They were really impressed by the practical and meaningful topics, the considerate conference arrangement, efficient cooperation from different departments and so on.
Last but not the least, the guests believed the GLF has provided a great platform, for better communication and cooperation for global lawyers. Some of the guests even sent message to the organizer, mentioned that they definitely would come again if they were invited.
Q：I think all of you have done a great job.
K：Thank you, it couldn’t be better. As the organizers, Department of Justice of GD and GD Lawyers Association, they have achieved an outstanding job, made this conference such a success. As volunteers, we are so grateful for having this precious chance, and really proud of our country.
Q：Kaying, thank you very much for sharing with us.As our time is up, I have only one more question: what do you feel about this event as a lawyer?
K：As a Chinese lawyer, I’m super proud for having witnessed this amazing event, and standing in the middle of this new era.I believe Chinese lawyers will play a bigger role on the global stage in the future.
As the Minister of our Justice department, Mr. Fu Zhenghua has said:We will help to promote Chinese lawyers to "go global", establish overseas branches of Chinese law firms, improve the training of foreign-related lawyers, provide reliable legal services and guarantee for the major projects overseas.
Q：I am so proud to be a Chinese lawyer as well. Thank you again for your time, Kaying.
K：You’re very welcome.
